The
Magic Leaves
A History of Haida Argillite Carving - NEW
Peter L. Macnair and Alan L. Hoover
Haida artists have
created and sold argillite carvings since the 1820s. The Magic Leaves
focuses on an exceptional collection donated to the Royal B.C. Museum
by the Reif family of Vancouver.
Argillite works are
unique in style and character, from ceremonial pipes to model poles, animal-form
bowls to elaborate platters and chests. A force in the continuity of Haida
art styles through the 19th and 20th centuries, argillite carving has
inspired carvings in other materials, like gold and silver. And argillite
continues to be an important medium for contemporary Haida artists.
This long-awaited
new edition of a classic book on Northwest Coast art is released in concert
with a new permanent exhibit in the Royal BC Museum, which features many
of the items in the book.
Peter Macnair is Curator
Emeritus in Anthropology at the RBCM.
Alan Hoover recently retired as the RBCM's Manager of Anthropology.
Argillite
is dense, black shale composed of fine mineral clay and carbon that have
been modified by heat. The Haida harvest this stone from their exclusive
quarry on Slatechuck Creek near Skidegate, Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte
Islands). Wet when quarried, argillite is dried carefully before it is
carved with woodworking tools.
