An Activity Guide About the Songbirds of
British Columbia

thrash Family MIMIDAE: Mockingbirds and Thrashers

FIELD MARKS
There are four members of this family found in British Columbia. These birds are well known for their beautiful voices and their ability as mimics. They are large songbirds with long tails and short wings. They have strong legs and thick bills.

FOOD
Insects and berries are most important in their diet. They are also known to eat seeds, nuts, spiders, snails and earthworms. They forage on the ground, but also in shrubs and trees.

HABITAT
Thrashers prefer to live in thick shrubs, often near the edge of woods, along streams and in hedges around gardens.

NESTING
Nests are built in low shrubs that have dense, thorny branches. They are bowl-shaped and built of twigs and plant material. The eggs can be incubated by both parents or just by the female, but both parents feed the young.
