FIELD MARKS
There are 14 species of finches found in British Columbia. They are medium-sized to small songbirds with cone-shaped bills. Canaries are part of this family.

FOOD
Finches mainly eat seeds. They also forage in trees and bushes eating buds and other vegetable matter. Many finches feed their young regurgitated seeds.

HABITAT
Most finches prefer mixed open forests.

NESTING
Nests can be built anywhere from shrubs and trees to crevices on cliffs. The nests are usually open, cup-shaped structures built by the female. The female also incubates the eggs, but both parents feed the young.

Red Crossbill (Loxia curvirostra)
